  What about the birds?
The best months to hear birds are August, September, October and November. Early in the morning, five kinds of thrush and the Bare-Throated Bellbird will call you out of bed. The Gray-Hooded Attila will call out from the stream nearby. In the afternoons, you are likely to catch the Brown and Tataupe Tinamou (Crypturellus obsoletus and Crypturellus tataupa), Short-tailed Antthrush (Chamaeza campanisoma), singing at the top of their voices and, as night descends, the Common Potoo begins its melancholy call. Recently, (October 2007 it was nesting nearby).

The most common birds around are the Slaty-Breasted Wood Rails (Aramides saracura)and Blakish Rail (Rallus nigricans) the five kinds of thrush – the Yellow-Legged Thrush comes in the summer only, when the lowlands are too hot. All kinds of colourful Thraupidae, Yellow-bellied (Dacnis cayan), Golden-chevroned Tanager (Thraupis ornata), and sometimes the Azure-shouldered Tanager (Thraupis cyanoptera).

If there is a fruit tree nearby, with fruit, you will find the Blue-Bellied Parrot (Thiclaria malachitacea), and on the red flowers you may see a diversity of the marvelous hummingbirds: Frilled Coquette, the Planalto Hermit, Scaled-Throated Hermit, Black Jacobin, Glittering-bellied Emerald, Violet-capped Woodnymph, Brazilian Ruby, and Amethyst Woodstar (this last one is elusive, but you may be lucky). The Plover Crest inhabits the forestland and can be more tricky to find. Giant and the Tufted Anttshrikes are sometimes seen. Some Manakins, such as the Blue Manakin, Pin-Tailed Manakin or the Greenish Schiffornis, are easily found. The Long-trained Nightjar is often seen near by, but can not be guaranteed. The best months for it to appear would be August to October. A pair of Mottled Owls (Ciccaba vergata) were seen, in day time, inside the forest near the ground recently.

We hope to welcome you soon to Vale das Taquaras.
