Prices and Booking

All our prices come with three main meals included, breakfast, lunch and a light dinner. Tea with snacks at 5 pm. is there, for those who likes it.

A local guide is included although we can get a more professional and English speaking guide, if desired, but we need to know in advance of a few weeks and it will be charged an extra price. Horse riding is also on the house. All the beds are of the most comfortable type, with eider duvet and pillows. Sheets have at least 200 to 300 threads.

Once here at the Lodge you have plenty of different trails to walk and no driving is needed. On the other hand if you want to go to Macaé de Cima (20 minutes drive) it can be arranged.

The main meal is at lunch time but if a group has gone for a long trail and wants to take their luncheon with them, they will take sandwiches and a fruit. At dinner time they will have their main meal. High season is from the end of July until the beginning of November.

Birds don’t sing between December and July as much as the other month.

3 day package

Day 1
Morning collection from Rio and transfer to Vale das Taquaras Lodge – approximately three hours. On arrival at the Lodge soft drinks and snacks are served on the veranda while you relax and check out the hummingbird feeders – up to 16 species of hummingbird are possible depending on the time of year, including Frilled Coquette and the occasional Amethyst Woodstar.

For lunch we serve a delicious home cooked three course meal with coffee and then later in the afternoon we set out to explore the Lodge garden and nearby trails.

Sightings may include Grey-hooded Attila, Blue-bellied Parrot (if nearby trees are fruiting), Bare-throated Bellbird, White-winged, Green Backed, Crested, and Chesnut-crowned Becards, Safffron Toucanet, and Surucua trogon and the more shy Black-throated Trogon, two kinds of Greenlets: Rufous-crowned and Grey-eyed Greenlet, and a variety of colourful tanagers such as Azure-shouldered, Golden-chevroned, Brassy-breasted and Cinnamon Tanagers. At nightfall look out for Common Potoos in the garden.

Day 2
We depart early to spend the morning birding the Long Trail – a 1,700 metre trail that passes through excellent quality Atlantic Forest with stands of bamboo or taquaras.

Key species to be found here include: Black-hawk Eagle, the rare White-bearded Antshrike (a bamboo specialist), Ferruginous Antbird, White-bibbed Antbird, Rufous Gnateater, Slaty Bristlefront, Black-billed Scythebill, White-collared Foliage-gleaner, White-eyed Foliage-gleaner, Greenish Schiffornis, Temminck’s Seedeater and the locally scarce Half-collared Sparrow.

We arrive back at the Lodge for lunch and a siesta, before heading back out in the late afternoon to walk along one of the unpaved roads. This road has very few passing cars (sometimes none will go by for hours on end) and so is excellent for birds. The idea is to catch the evening burst of bird activity and after dark catch some the night life! Tropical Screech-Owl is very common bird and recently we found the second record of Stygian Owl for Rio State along this road.
Nightjars we hope to see include Rufous Nightjar and the spectacular Long-trained Nightjar! Dinner will be a light one, consisting of soups, breads with cheese and fruit.

Day 3
This day will depend on the time our guests have to leave: if late in the afternoon, we have an early breakfast and go to an unpaved road 10 minutes away, where there is a second chance to see the White-bearded Antshrike along with Plovercrest (a humming bird that only lives in the forest), Eared Pygmy-Tyrant, White throated Spadebill and Hooded Berryeater.

We arrive back at the Lodge for lunch before going to Macae de Cima for a last look at birds and continue on to Rio. For those who will leave at noon, we will have an early breakfast before embarking on a 2 hours visit to Macae de Cima – a nearby area of higher altitude montane forest situated at around 1,400 m above sea level. Key species to try for here include Plovercrest, Giant Antshrike, Rufous-backed Antvireo, Hooded Berryeater, Black-and-gold Cotinga and Bay-chested Warbling-Finch. From here we set off for our journey to Rio, arriving at one pm.
