The regions vast array of bird species make it a favorite with the Brazilian birding community. Renowned ornithologist Helmut Sick visited Vale das Taquaras on several occasions in the 1980s, to watch the birds and help compile the bird list, as did Fernando Pacheco, who is today one of the finest ornithologists in Brazil.
Since this time, the property’s forest has been enriched with the re-planting of many hardwood trees which had previously been removed (prior to our arrival in 1978), and the energetic re-growth of the palm tree population, which had previously been decimated. The bird life in Vale das Tarquaras has been significantly enriched over the past couple of decades and today offers a unique and rich bird watching experience.
Vale das Taquaras is only one and a half hours from the lowland birds of Requa Reserve (Guapi-Assu). If your trip allows it, plan to visit both Regua and Vale das Taquaras, for the perfect opportunity to take in both the lowland and the highland birds of the region! |
